Description

Function:

Measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases of the engine.

Helps the Engine Control Unit (ECU) maintain the correct air–fuel mixture (stoichiometric ratio) for optimal combustion, emissions, fuel efficiency, and performance.

Sends a voltage signal to the ECU; voltage typically changes depending on whether the exhaust mixture is rich (less oxygen) or lean (more oxygen).

Location:

It is fitted in the exhaust system – usually upstream, i.e. before the catalytic converter. (Ensures the ECU has data about combustion gases before conversion.)
